Volunteers in Medicine Clinic

Working together to increase the use of appropriate self care

Volunteers in Medicine clinic (VIM) is our community's response to providing access to healthcare for low-income, uninsured adults. Each year, over 1300 individuals receive medical care at the clinic from local doctors, dentists, nurses, specialists, and counselors who volunteer their time and expertise.

The patients seen at VIM do not receive publicly funded health insurance such as Medicare or Medicaid. They are often employed for low wages and reduced hours making health insurance unaffordable. The management of chronic disease has evolved as a patient care priority. The staff and volunteers recognize that combinations of treatment characteristics are needed in order to best care for patients. These include a trusted relationship with a provider, education, pharmaceuticals, and self-care efforts. Patients receive this level of care and support at VIM.

Regular appointments with healthcare professionals and access to medications are critical in reducing complications, risks, and hospitalizations for patients with chronic disease conditions. Responding to the increase in the number of patients with diabetes and other chronic diseases, VIM staff and volunteers added weight management and low-impact exercise programs, life coaches, and group education sessions to promote self-care and healthy lifestyle choices.
